Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer has named CASES as the recipient of a 2014 Borough President Capital Award. CASES is grateful to receive this $40,000 grant, which will support the initial outfitting of our new Harlem location at 2090 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard. The Harlem location will house four CASES’ programs (across multiple separate floors) and serve the following populations:

1. Nathaniel Clinic: an outpatient mental health clinic targeting youth and adults involved in the criminal justice system who have untreated mental illness;
2. Manhattan Assertive Community Treatment: serving adults with serious mental illness, many of whom are homeless, unemployed, and have a history of high usage of psychiatric hospitalization/emergency rooms;
3. Nathaniel Assertive Community Treatment: serving similar adults with serious mental illness who would otherwise facie incarceration as a result of felony charges; and
4. Choices Alternative to Detention: serving youth aged 13-15 who are facing charges in New York County Family Court and have been diverted from juvenile detention.

Capital support from the Manhattan Borough President will help CASES purchase SMART boards for classrooms, workstations for front-line staff, and related equipment. These purchases will support the effective launch of CASES’ Harlem site, which will serve residents in an area with high rates of poverty, crime, and mental health hospitalization.
