Spring 2005:

In 1989, CASES was formed when two demonstration projects developed by the Vera Institute of Justice, the Court Employment Project (CEP) and the Community Service Sentencing Project (CSSP), were brought under one umbrella organization. Soon after the merger of these programs, I joined CASES. I understood that the credibility and success of our programs hinged on the dedication and capability of our staff. For over twenty-five years, CSSP has brought great value to our communities and improved our participants’ lives. We have received an endless stream of letters from participants thanking us for addressing their service needs and from worksites expressing gratitude to our staff for their hard work. One participant told us, “I got more than I bargained for with CSSP…I can look in the mirror and be happy with myself.” A Police Athletic League Center Director from the Bronx wrote, “[Your staff’s] attention to detail and efficiency at accomplishing tasks has been exemplary.” The Director of Harlem House contacted us to say, “I would not have been able to make significant improvements to our program without your help, support and contribution.” A garden manager from Queens expressed her appreciation by telling us, “CASES staff has always been there to support us through the years.” We recently learned that the funding for CSSP will end, and it is with a heavy heart that I extend my gratitude to the tireless CSSP staff. Through their hard and often thankless work, our highly professional staff was successful in bringing credibility to our fledgling organization. Many of our staff has been with us for 10 years or more. Our site supervisors, enforcement team, compliance monitors, court directors, support service coordinators, and administrative support staff have all been instrumental in the success of our program over the years. I want to recognize and commend their dedication, professionalism and diligence. Their service to CASES was instrumental to its growth and has helped to build CASES’ reputation in New York City’s courtrooms and the criminal justice community.
