CASES LEADS MULTI-AGENCY EFFORT TO IMPROVE RESPONSE TO MENTALLY ILL PERSONS IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM
CASES has brought together stakeholders in the criminal justice and mental health communities to identify barriers to the delivery of mental health services to court-involved individuals.
Read MoreCASES’ Adult Behavioral Health programs provide a range of services to help New Yorkers address substance abuse and mental illness while remaining in the community and accessing the supports needed to build stable, productive lives. Most of our Adult Behavioral Health programs begin in New York City courts, where CASES staff identify individuals at risk of incarceration who would be better served by remaining in the community and participating in an alternative sanction.
CASES’ alternative sanctions are more effective than traditional jail and prison stays because they engage individuals in services such as mental health and substance abuse treatment, gender-specific support, housing, education, and employment training, which are essential to long-term success. For court-involved clients, CASES’ Adult Behavioral Health programs apply clinical strategies to end the cycle of arrest, confinement, release, and re-arrest by providing access to community treatment and support.
In addition to programs for court-involved populations, CASES also operates Manhattan Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), which serves individuals residing in Upper Manhattan who have serious and persistent mental illness and are not typically court-involved. Manhattan ACT employs clinical strategies designed to break the cycle of emergency room visits and repeat hospitalization/institutionalization by providing long-term support to sustain clients in the community.
