Youth Worker - CEP

Reports to: Family Court ATD Program Director

Duties and Responsibilities: The Youth Worker will be assigned to CASES’ Family Court Alternative to Detention Program. This program provides the supervision and support necessary to help ensure that Family Court respondents placed in the program pre-disposition attend all their court hearings and avoid further involvement in the criminal justice system. The Youth Worker will manage a caseload of approximately 20 Family Court respondents. There are two main components of the Youth Worker’s position – providing community monitoring and working in the after school program. Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Conduct home and school visits, documenting attendance and participation;
  • Observe respondents in their communities and homes;
  • Do daily curfew checks;
  • Work with Family Court Services ATD team to provide after school activities;
  • Connect youth to positive activities in their communities and verify their attendance and participation;
  • Write progress notes documenting participants’ accountability and performance in program;
  • Accompany participants to outside appointments, when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate youth;
  • Experience developing relationships with schools, community based organizations and/or other youth service providers;
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary and diverse team;
  • Time flexibility: the Youth Worker will be expected to work until 8pm;

Part Time Teacher-CEP

Duties and Responsibilities: The Part Time Teacher specific duties include:

This position entails an opportunity to teach in a creative, dynamic team environment within small classrooms utilizing innovative curricula. Position entails a 24-28-hour a week commitment from Monday-Thursday.

  • Co-teaching an intensive GED Preparation class that meets four days a week.
  • Developing and implementing relevant educational classes in collaboration with the education unit.
  • Integrating outside resources into in-house activities. This could include guest speakers, trips to museums, and collaboration with other agencies on mutually designed projects, etc.
  • Providing one-on-one counseling and educational tutoring to participants relating to their educational goals, challenges and progress.
  • Communicating both orally and in writing about participant’s progress and challenges with other CEP staff.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of BA/BS degree, Masters in Education preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, and motivate youth;
  • Ability to teach all subjects at elementary and early high school level, particularly math;
  • Experience with developing innovative curricula;

DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE

Reports to: Director of Strategic Planning and Analysis

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Overview: As part of CASES’ six-person Strategic Analysis and Planning Unit, the Development Associate will research and develop private funding sources, create proposals and reports for private and government entities, create communications materials, and help manage the reporting calendar and donor database, among other responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform grant writing activities including, but not limited to, writing proposals, preparing supporting documents, and ensuring their timely submission;
  • Research prospective individual and institutional donors;
  • Keep abreast of justice system issues and program interventions relevant to CASES’ clients and use this information to inform CASES’ proposal writing and general fundraising strategy;
  • Prepare reports and maintain files detailing fundraising progress;
  • Maintain and organize funding information including, but not limited to, proposal activity information, funder files, donor tracking systems, and donor communications;
  • Provide support for special events as needed;
  • Manage communications functions including the production of quarterly newsletters;
  • Represent agency and network with public and private funding sources where appropriate;
  • Based on interests and abilities, the Development Associate may also help produce CASES’ annual report, write content for and update company Website, participate in planning meetings for new programs, and research tools or strategies for improving or reporting on program outcomes; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Strategic Planning and Analysis.

Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. degree, Master’s preferred, plus at least 2 years development experience

SOCIAL WORKER-CEP

Reports to: Senior Social Worker

Description: The social worker will conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments of CEP participants to determine which of these young people need community-based mental health treatment. The social worker will write psychosocial reports that include pertinent clinical information, a rationale for need for treatment, and any relevant psychiatric diagnoses. Working with the Case Coordination and Clinical Services and mental health team, the social worker will develop linkages with community based mental health organizations that provide mental health services to adolescents and will refer participants for appropriate services. When participants are placed on waiting lists, our social worker will monitor their mental health status and provide individual counseling at CASES until the placement is secured. Once a placement has been secured, the social worker will maintain contact with the provider to monitor each participant’s progress in treatment.

Qualifications:

  • Master's level clinical degree;
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary and diverse team;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, and motivate youth;
  • Thorough understanding of a strengths-based youth development approach to working with young people;
  • Experience working with young offenders is helpful although not required;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with participants and staff alike.

EDUCATION SPECIALIST-CEP

Responsibilities: The Education Specialist will be assigned to CASES’ Family Court Alternative to Detention Program. This program provides the supervision and support necessary to help ensure that Family Court respondents placed in the program pre-disposition attend all their court hearings and avoid further involvement in the criminal justice system. The Education Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the education activities in the after school component of the ATD program and assisting with respondents’ education related issues. Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Planning and developing curricula, scheduling classes and teaching in the after school program;
  • Providing some individual tutoring;
  • Writing accurate and timely progress notes on all program participants;
  • Assisting with school visits and verification of school attendance;
  • Assisting with and advising team members, respondents and their families on all education related issues and dealings with the New York City Department of Education.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, specialization or Master’s degree in Education or related field a plus;
  • Strong interest in youth and education;

HUMAN RESOURCE ASSOCIATE

Responsibilities: Assist Director, Human Resources in Benefits Management and support for policies which are consistent with records maintenance. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting employees to prepare claims for benefits and contacting insurance carriers if needed;
  • Resolving employee questions and problems by researching benefits policies and procedures;
  • Scheduling new staff for Benefits orientation;

Responsibilities: Follow up with students who have transitioned from CPHS with the goal of better understanding the school's impact on court-involved youth; Work with school staff to establish systems for post-program contact; Assist school staff and CASES' performance measurement unit to develop improved measures for school-specific outcomes; Help school advisors to analyze student attendance patterns and develop recommendations to increase school attendance; Analyze patterns of grade and credit attainment through monthly reports on current student body with recommendations for systemic improvement; Assist in the development, through research on survey instruments, and administration of student and parent surveys to measure student engagement.

Responsibilities: Attend weekly Education Unit meetings, attend orientation and assessment activities as appropriate to determining barriers to participants’ educational development, and support Education Unit operations; Contact and perform site visits as needed to community schools to build collaboration between CASES and schoolteachers, guidance counselors, and principals; Create and distribute informational materials about CASES’in-house classes and activities to promote interest and participation among Court Employment Project (CEP) participants; Research best practices in working with over-age, under-credited students who have performed poorly in public schools; Interview participants to identify common barriers to academic achievement; Assist in the development of academic curriculum and educational activities tailored to the specific needs of the CEP population.

Responsibilities: Assist in the identification of potential community-based organizations to which CASES can refer participants, including community-based drug treatment programs, housing, mental health, public assistance, and employment services; For each community-based provider identified, obtain detailed information about referral requirements; Assist Day Custody staff in obtaining additional government partners; Assist in the creation of materials for distribution to referral sources; Assist in the development of a menu of services available to participants; Assist in the identification of areas in which to improve the program’s daily operations and provide program director with recommendations for smooth service delivery; Collaborate with community-based service providers to ensure a productive working relationship with referred Day Custody Program participants.
