COURT EMPLOYMENT
PROJECT - Education Unit Internship
Internship Opportunity: CASES,
New York City's oldest and largest alternative-to-incarceration
organization, has an internship opportunity in the Education Unit
of our Court Employment Project (CEP). CEP
is an award-winning non-residential alternative-to-incarceration
program for young felony offenders. CEP combines a strengths-based,
youth development focus with accountability to the courts. The youth
development model emphasizes youths' skills and abilities - rather
than focusing on their deficiencies - and helps them set high expectations
for their own educational, vocational and social development. CEP
works closely with judges, probation officers, defense attorneys
and prosecutors to serve more than 600 participants annually.
CEP's Education
Unit provides education advocacy and placement assistance; job
readiness training; job referrals; and on-site academic enrichment
classes for a range of skill levels. Outdoor, adventure-based learning
activities are offered throughout the year, including an overnight
summer camp. Special programs include Career Exploration, a twelve-week
job training and internship program, and Youth Enterprise, a six-month
entrepreneurship program that trains participants to operate their
own graphics-based business.
The education intern would be housed in the CEP
Education Unit where s/he would assist teachers with in-house classroom
activities. This internship will provide someone with hands-on experience
in working with court-involved youth who have significant educational
needs. The internship is unpaid. The education intern will determine
the number of hours to work with Cep's Director of Programs and
External Affairs, however most educational activities take place
at CASES during the hours of 2 and 6 p.m, Monday- Friday.
Responsibilities include:
· Tutoring participants (ages 13-17) in reading, writing
and math in our After School Homework Help classes,
· Assisting teachers with computer graphics and basic Internet
skills class,
· Assisting teachers with administrative duties including
data entry, assembling reading lists, organizing our in-house library,
and purchasing new books, and
· Researching new tools to bolster our current curriculum.
