Joel Copperman, Chief Executive Officer/President
Joel Copperman joined CASES in 1990. He became CASES first Executive
Director shortly after the Court Employment Project and the Community
Service Sentencing Project - originally demonstration programs designed
and managed by the Vera Institute of Justice - were brought together as
a separate organization in 1989. Prior to joining CASES, Mr. Copperman
held a number of positions in New York City Government, including Legislative
Representative in Albany, Deputy Director of the Mayor's Office of Operations,
and as the first Director of the Mayor's Office of Contracts. Mr. Copperman
also worked as a legal services lawyer at Greater Boston Legal Services.
Mr. Copperman holds a B.A. from Bradley University, a J.D. from Boston
University School of Law, and a M.P.P from the John F. Kennedy School
of Government at Harvard University.
Rebecca Asbury, Chief Financial & Administrative
Officer/Treasurer
Rebecca Asbury joined CASES in 1996. Prior to joining CASES, Ms. Asbury
was Assistant Vice President for Finance & Administration at Bank
Street College of Education. She also spent two years in Madrid, Spain
where she taught at the Hillhouse Montessori School. Ms. Asbury holds
a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and a M.P.A. from Baruch College.
Ellen Fried, Counsel/Secretary
Ellen Fried joined CASES in 1992. Prior to joining CASES, Ms. Fried was
an attorney at the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Division and Appeals
Bureau. Ms. Fried also practiced law at the New York City Commission on
Human Rights. Ms. Fried holds a B.A. from Oberlin College and a J.D. from
Northeastern University School of Law.
Joe McLaughlin, Court Employment Project Director
Joe McLaughlin began his career in the criminal justice system in 1989 as a New York City Urban Fellow, working as a Special Assistant to theExecutive Director of the New York City Board of Correction. Upon completion of the Urban Fellows Program, Joe began working for the Vera Institute of Justice as a Planner in their Community Service Sentencing Project. This project was later merged with the Court Employment Project to form the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES). Shortly thereafter, Joe designed and implemented a drug relapse prevention program that he managed for the next two years before accepting a position as Executive Assistant to the Director of the Court Employment Project. In 1995 Joe left CASES and moved to Pennsylvania to work for VisionQuest where he managed the Chester County HomeQuest Program. In 1996 he returned to CASES as Deputy Director of Program Services, managing all education, workforce development, substance abuse, a summer camp and adventure based education programming. In June of 2002 Joe was promoted to Director of the Court Employment Project and is responsible for overseeing the Supreme and Family court youth programs including court operations, case management and program services. Joe is also a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Lehigh County Office of Children and Youth. Joe has a BA in economics from Boston College.
