g  Court Employment     Project

The Court Employment Project (CEP) offers extensive arts programming. We use art in multiple ways: to engage our young people in learning; to build their self-confidence and sense of accomplishment; to help them cope with and understand their emotional needs; and to offer them opportunities they are usually not afforded. Arts programming in CEP provides our participants with regularly scheduled art classes and workshops on an on-going basis, after-school, during school holidays, and during the summer. Our dedicated art studio is a safe-space where our young people can develop an array of artistic skills while building meaningful relationships with their peers and our staff. Classes are typically small - with no more than 10 participants - ensuring that everyone in the class gets the attention they deserve. Our art classes and workshops provide a powerful alternate means of expression for participants who have difficulty with effective verbal communication, and provide a venue to explore their experiences.

CEP's art classes are overseen by Sana Musasama, our artist-in-residence, one of only ten women nationwide to win an "Anonymous was a Woman" Award recognizing women artists who show tremendous creative talent. In addition, CASES partners with organizations that specialize in art production. Over the past few years, we have worked extensively with Art Start and Art in General to enhance our participants' art opportunities. We have also worked with the Green Guerillas on two mural projects in Harlem.
